5. communal renters – the yard

Location: Preston on Wurundjeri Country

Size: 630m²

Focus: urban permaculture rental, growing and sustaining its renters with excess shared with neighbours and broader community. Chickens were borrowed from neighbours to deal with weed and pest problems; a sharing shed for sharing books and dress ups; outdoor shower for bathing with the lorikeets; salvaged everything from swapped goods and hard rubbish; many loads of mulching; wicking beds out of old ibc containers; owl boxes to deal with the rats; bee hives; tree losses from storms; green house from salvaged windows; buckets of raspberries and humongous harvestings… plenty of was learnt, plenty was shared… and after a good 13 or so years, the yard closed its chapter. It was even featured in the Retrosuburbia book by David Holmgren. Read it here: https://retrosuburbia.com/case-studies/sharehouse-case-study/
